Study Permit
A Study Permit allows international students to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada for the duration of their academic program, with opportunities for part-time work and post-graduation work permits.
Overview
The Canada Study Permit is a document required for international students to pursue academic programs at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. It allows legal residence and study, typically valid for the program's duration. Holders may work on or off campus under certain conditions and may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after studies, which can aid in immigration. Applicants must prove acceptance at a DLI, sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses, a clean criminal record, and intent to leave Canada after studies. The permit is not a visa; a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is also needed for entry.
Requirements
- Be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada and have an acceptance letter.
- Prove sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses for yourself and accompanying family, and return transportation.
- Have no criminal record; may need a police certificate.
- Be in good health; complete a medical exam as required.
- Convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada after your studies (temporary resident intent).
- Some applicants may need to provide language test scores (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL).
Application steps
- Obtain an acceptance letter from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
- Prepare application documents, including the acceptance letter, proof of funds, passport, and photos.
- Submit the study permit application online or by paper, and pay the application fee.
- If required, complete a medical exam at a designated clinic.
- Provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) as requested.
- Wait for processing; may be asked for additional documents or an interview.
- If approved, receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction.
- Upon arrival in Canada, present the POE letter to obtain the formal study permit at the border.
Tips
- Apply early to allow sufficient processing time.
- Ensure proof of funds is adequate and sources are clear; avoid large, recent deposits.
- Write a detailed and reasonable study plan that highlights ties to your home country and intent to return.
- Choose a reputable DLI; avoid unaccredited institutions.
- Fill out the application form truthfully; do not conceal any information.
- If previously refused, analyze the reasons and address them before reapplying.
