Digital Nomad Visa
The Romania Digital Nomad Visa is a residence permit for remote workers, allowing them to live in Romania while working for employers outside the country. It is typically valid for one year and renewable.
Overview
The Romania Digital Nomad Visa is a residence permit designed for remote workers, allowing holders to reside in Romania while continuing to work for employers outside the country. The visa is usually valid for one year and can be renewed. Applicants must prove that their income comes from sources outside Romania and that their work can be performed remotely. As an EU member state, Romania offers convenient travel within the Schengen Area (though it has not yet fully joined), relatively low living costs, and good internet infrastructure, making it suitable for long-term stays by digital nomads. Visa applications must be submitted at Romanian embassies or consulates abroad, and upon approval, holders must apply for a residence card after entering Romania.
Requirements
- Must be a non-EU citizen
- Must work for an employer outside Romania or have a self-owned business registered outside Romania
- Must provide an employment contract or business proof showing remote work capability
- Must meet the minimum income threshold set by Romanian authorities (check official sources for current amount)
- Must hold a valid passport
- Must have no criminal record
- Must purchase health insurance covering Romania
Application steps
- Prepare required documents: passport, income proof, employment contract, criminal record certificate, health insurance, etc.
- Schedule an appointment and submit the visa application at a Romanian embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or legal residence.
- Wait for processing; you may be asked to provide additional documents or attend an interview.
- Upon approval, receive a D-type long-stay visa and enter Romania.
- Within 15 days of arrival, visit the local immigration office to apply for a residence card and complete fingerprinting.
- Collect the residence card and officially obtain digital nomad status.
Tips
- Confirm the exact income requirement in advance and ensure all documents are translated into Romanian or English and notarized/apostilled.
- Check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the visa validity.
- Since Romania is not yet a full Schengen member, this visa does not allow free travel to other Schengen countries, but you can apply for a short-stay Schengen visa separately.
- Apply for the residence card promptly after entry to avoid overstaying.
