Student Residence Permit
The Student Residence Permit allows non-EU/EEA citizens to live in Sweden while pursuing full-time higher education, such as a bachelor's, master's, or PhD program.
Overview
The Swedish Student Residence Permit is a residence type for non-EU/EEA citizens who plan to pursue full-time higher education (e.g., bachelor's, master's, PhD) in Sweden. Applicants must have been admitted to a Swedish higher education institution and the program must be full-time. The permit typically covers the entire study period but is issued annually or per semester depending on the study duration. Holders can legally live and study in Sweden and are allowed to work up to a certain number of hours per week during semesters (specific standards subject to the latest official updates) and full-time during holidays. After graduation, holders can apply for additional time to stay for job seeking or starting a business. Note that this permit does not directly lead to permanent residence but can serve as a starting point for immigration to Sweden.
Requirements
- Have been admitted as a full-time student to a Swedish university or higher education institution and received an admission letter.
- Hold a valid passport.
- Be able to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition fees (if applicable) and living expenses in Sweden.
- Have health insurance covering the entire residence period (usually provided by the school or related to the Swedish personal identity number system, depending on the situation).
- Intend to primarily engage in study activities in Sweden, not other purposes.
- Have no serious criminal record or history of violating immigration laws.
Application steps
- Apply to a Swedish university and receive an admission letter.
- Prepare required documents, including the admission letter, proof of funds, passport copy, etc.
- Submit the residence permit application online via the Swedish Migration Agency website and pay the application fee.
- Submit biometric information (fingerprints and photo) at a designated visa application center or embassy.
- Wait for the Migration Agency to process the application; additional documents may be requested.
- After receiving a decision, if approved, collect the residence card upon entry into Sweden.
Tips
- Apply as early as possible, preferably 3-4 months before the program starts, as processing times can be long.
- Ensure the proof of funds meets the Migration Agency's requirements, typically covering one year's living expenses plus tuition fees.
- Carefully verify that the admission letter confirms full-time study and that the institution is recognized.
- If bringing family members, they must apply for separate residence permits.
- Keep the email address used for the application active to receive notifications from the Migration Agency.
