Innovator Founder Visa

InvestmentHard

The Innovator Founder Visa is for entrepreneurs who want to set up and run an innovative, scalable business in the UK. It requires endorsement from a UK-approved endorsing body and has no minimum investment requirement.

Overview

The UK Innovator Founder Visa is designed for entrepreneurs who intend to establish and operate an innovative, scalable business in the UK. Applicants must obtain endorsement from a UK-designated endorsing body (such as an innovation agency, business incubator, or government-designated organization) that confirms the business plan is innovative, viable, and scalable. Unlike the previous Innovator Visa, the new policy does not require a minimum investment amount. However, applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to support themselves and their dependents in the UK, and meet English language proficiency requirements (typically CEFR B2 level). The initial visa is valid for 3 years, after which extensions can be applied for. Continuous compliance with requirements can lead to indefinite leave to remain (permanent residency). This pathway is suitable for individuals with a mature business concept who wish to realize their entrepreneurial goals in the UK. However, note that the endorsing body's assessment standards are strict, and the business plan must show clear differentiation from existing market offerings.

Requirements

  • Obtain endorsement from a UK-designated endorsing body (e.g., innovation agency, business incubator, government-designated organization) confirming the business plan is innovative, viable, and scalable.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency at CEFR B2 level (equivalent to IELTS 5.5 in each component).
  • Provide evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself and your dependents in the UK (specific amounts as per latest official guidance).
  • The business must be a new venture, not an existing UK business.
  • Pass a genuineness test (including an interview).

Application steps

  1. Prepare a business plan that meets the criteria of innovation, viability, and scalability.
  2. Contact a UK-designated endorsing body, submit your business plan, and obtain an endorsement letter.
  3. Prepare evidence of English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS test report) and financial means.
  4. Complete the online visa application form, pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
  5. Book and attend an appointment at a visa application center to provide biometric information (fingerprints and photograph).
  6. Attend any required interview (arranged by the endorsing body or UK Visas and Immigration).
  7. Wait for a decision on your application. If approved, collect your visa.

Tips

  • The business plan is crucial; consider consulting a professional immigration lawyer or business advisor to ensure it meets endorsing body requirements.
  • Research endorsing bodies in advance and choose one that aligns with your industry.
  • Financial evidence should cover at least 9 months of living expenses; prepare it early.
  • Arrange English language tests well in advance to avoid issues with expired results.
  • During the interview, clearly articulate the innovative aspects of your business model and market potential.
  • Maintain communication with the endorsing body and respond promptly to any requests for additional documents.
